The Day of the Lipizzaner on Sunday, 22 May, will be a tribute to 436 years of the Lipica Stud Farm and Lipizzaner tradition
19 May marks 436 years since the Habsburg Archduke Charles II, son of Emperor Ferdinand I, purchased the Lipica estate from the Bishop of Trieste. This was the foundation of the future stud farm in Lipica. The day also counts as the start of breeding the Lipizzaner horse breed. Lipica Stud Farm and the Slovenian Lipizzaner Breeding Association will pay tribute to this historical event with the Day of the Lipizzaner on Sunday, 22 May.
This year’s Day of the Lipizzaner has a new concept with a varied all-day programme of festivities from 9:30 to 18:00, aimed at families and horse enthusiasts. The highlight of the celebrations will be a Lipica Classical Riding School gala show with special guests at 15:00 in the Lipica hippodrome.
Dr. Boštjan Bizjak, Acting Director of Lipica Stud Farm, is watching over the final preparations with pride and satisfaction: “All fans of Lipica and Lipizzaner horses are warmly invited to join us on the Day of the Lipizzaner. We are looking forward to showing them the extraordinary 436-year heritage of Lipica Stud Farm, the cradle of the Lipizzaner breed. We will be happy to show them around the estate – after the renovation it is more beautiful and accessible than ever. But most of all we are excited to show off its biggest treasure – selected Lipizzaner stallions with riders from Lipica Classic Riding School. Dedicated to invaluable heritage and one of the national symbols of Slovenia, the Day of the Lipizzaner will prove yet again that Lipica Stud Farm and the Lipizzaner breed deserve to be added to the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is our most important project at the moment, connecting Lipica Stud Farm with the other stud farms where Lipizzaner horses are bred.”
The celebration will begin at 9:30 with one of the most beautiful scenes that visitors can ever see in Lipica – a herd of over 40 Lipizzaner mares trotting out to pasture. The Day of the Lipizzaner will continue with a new feature at 10:00 – a show of the Lipizzaner horses that are for sale. If the weather is good, from 11:00 to 15:00 visitors will be able to see this year’s Lipizzaner foals in the courtyard outside the Borjača stables.
The Lipizzaners will be joined by members of the Slovenian Lipizzaner Breeding Association, which brings together private breeders of Lipizzaner horses, and the promotional group of the Krumperk Pedagogic and Research Centre at the Biotechnical Faculty. Other interesting events will include demonstrations of horse team racing and of the process of harnessing and shoeing Lipizzaner horses. Children will be able to take part in creative workshops and a Meet the Ponies workshop, and even try their hand at riding a pony. Carriage rides along Lipica’s most beautiful tree-lined avenues are sure to prove an unforgettable family experience, while visitors can also enjoy a guided tour of the stud farm or discover the 27 sights of the Lipica estate for themselves with the help of the Lipica Guide mobile app.
The highlight of the day will be the Lipica Classical Riding School gala show at 15:00 in the Lipica hippodrome, concluding with spectacular airs above the ground. The gala show will include the debut of Lipica Classical Riding School’s youngest rider, Teuta Spači, appearing in a quadrille of young stallions.
