FEI World Driving Championships for Pairs 2017

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) trusted Lipica Stud Farm with organisation of the FEI World Driving Championships for Pairs 2017. We are proud that this important competition will put Lipica and the Lipizzaner horse, as well as the Kras region and Slovenia in the spotlight of the world equestrian public for a week.

Three disciplines of the FEI World Driving Championships for Pairs 2017

Dressage driving takes place in a 40 metres wide and 100 metres long arena. In dressage driving it is important that drivers carry out the determined figures, such as for example circle and diagonal at exactly specified positions. Swing and elegance are important in horse movement. Judges assess individual figures of the dressage task with points from 0 to 10, where score 0 means that the figure was not carried out, and score 10 means perfect performance of the figure. An overall assessment of the performance is also important, since it includes harmony of horses, carriage, and driver.

Marathon drive is divided into three stages. In stage A, competitors drive from three to eight kilometres. This is followed by a transfer phase or approximately one kilometre in step. This stage is followed by a veterinary inspection of horses. Stage B is the last one and includes eight fixed obstacles made of hard materials. Each of these stages must be completed in a determined time. The time spent for each of the eight obstacles is measured separately. Each of the obstacles consists of several doors that are numbered and marked with colours. Therefore, the drivers have more ways or more paths to drive through the door in the determined time. The shortest path among the doors is also the most challenging, and is therefore not necessarily the fastest.

Cones driving

Cones driving takes place in an arena that consists of several doors made of plastic cones, on top of which are water-filled balls. Each knocked down ball or cone brings three penalty points for the driver. The arena consists of 20 doors through which the driver must drive in the right order and in the determined direction. If the drivers exceed the allowed time, each additional second gives them a half penalty point. If more than one driver has the same number of points, the winner is the fastest driver. The title of the world champion belongs to the competitor with the lowest number of penalty points in all three disciplines.

The total sum of points of all three disciplines determines the winners or world champions.
