Lipizzan Festival

EVENT
20. und 21. Mai 2023

This year’s event, Lipizzan Day, is dedicated to an extremely important milestone for the Lipica Stud Farm and Lipizzan breeding, so we are dedicating a two-day event to it, which we have named „Lipizzan Festival“. At the end of last year, Lipizzan breeding was included on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This is a joint, successful nomination of the following countries, where Lipizzaner breeding traditionally takes place in national studs, as well as with private breeders. These are Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. The Republic of Slovenia had a leading role, under the guidance of the RS Directorate for Cultural Heritage. On this exceptional occasion, the Lipica Stud Farm will receive a UNESCO certificate, and for you, lovers and supporters of the Lipizzan horse, as well as loyal visitors of the Lipica Stud Farm, we have prepared a wonderful series of activities to which we warmly invite you. Representatives of other national studs from around the world will also join our event this time.

UNESCO INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE ACTIVITIES
The Republic of Slovenia has six elements of intangible cultural heritage inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As part of our program, we have also included Slovenian bobbin lace making (kljekljanje) and the skill of dry-stone wall construction.

Lace-clad Lipizzan horses have been created since 2022, initiated by the Cultural Association Kalunca from Veliki Dol, which preserves and nurtures the lace-making tradition in the Karst region. The inspiration for this lace comes from the hooks on the doors of the Lipizzan Museum, the covered riding arena, and the old Klub Hotel. In the 1980s, the design was created by the painter Erik Lovko, and the lace patterns were developed by Milena Jančar based on his motif. The lace featuring the little horse combines two elements from UNESCO’s intangible heritage list: lace-making in Slovenia and the breeding of Lipizzan horses.

  • 09:00 – 18:00 Exhibition of photographs „Tradition of Lipizzan Breeding“ from the project documentation for UNESCO nomination, Maestoso Hotel
  • 09:00 – 18:00 Screening of the film „Tradition of Lipizzan Breeding“ from eight partner countries of the project documentation for UNESCO nomination, Maestoso Hotel
  • From 09:00 – 15:00 Demonstration of bobbin lace-making skills by the Kalunca Association
  • From 10:00 Demonstration of the skill and practical workshop on dry-stone wall construction at the Lipica estate
Prior registration for the practical workshop is recommended: events@lipica.org, until May 15, 2023.

  • 10:30, 12:30, 15:30 Hobby Horsing and Fun with Lipizzan Miniatures

ETHNO PARK

  • 09:00 – 18:00 Market of local vendors
  • 11:00 – 18:00 Ethno Stage – Musical Journey:
    • 11:00 Folk band „Žametne Vrtnice“

„Žametne Vrtnice“ is a vocal-instrumental group that formed purely out of the desire for shared socializing, singing, and playing from the heart. This was followed by the selection of a repertoire that is created instinctively and inspired by the group, encompassing diverse music, predominantly ethno-folk, including some well-known folk songs as well as songs from the world of film music. The nine-member group consists of four female and two male vocalists, an accordion, and two mandolins. They play and sing with great joy and a desire to share their energy with others who simply wish to disconnect from everyday life and relax.

Folk music is what evokes spontaneity in the listener, and their concept is based on that, aiming to attract the audience to relaxed listening and singing along with them!

    • 13:00 Music group „Vruja“

Vruja is a music group that continues the tradition of music groups from the Slovenian Istria region, which have left a deep impact on the knowledge and popularization of Istrian musical heritage in recent decades. The name of the group has dialectal origins and means „spring“ or „fountain.“ Vruja was formed in March 2001. Just as the Istrian peninsula is a multicultural and multiethnic area, the composition of the group’s members reflects this diversity. Therefore, it is not surprising that they perform and showcase the musical traditions of the entire Istria region, representing the rich variety and legacy of our ancestors. Vruja strives, in their own unique way, to contribute to the mosaic of recreating and performing the musical heritage of Istria.

    • 14:00 Performance by members of the Cultural Association Kraški Šopek Sežana

The members of the Cultural Association Kraški Šopek Sežana wear tailored formal clothing that has been worn in Trieste and the surrounding Kras region since 1848. Over the centuries, distinctive folk costumes have developed in the Kras region, which were worn by residents on holidays and special occasions. In the 19th century, these garments became known as „national costumes“ as they symbolized the national identity of many individuals. The richly decorated costumes feature numerous embroideries and have become a symbol of our existence, our indigenous heritage, and our significance in the Kras region. The members of Kraški Šopek Sežana always feel an inner calling to proudly wear these costumes, representing the clothing of our ancestors, our grandmothers, and grandfathers.

The singers of traditional songs from Kraški Šopek Sežana have been singing together for 17 years and have performed with their voices on various stages. Through their singing, they preserve the folk songs that have lived with our ancestors, sung in the Kras region without instrumental accompaniment. They regularly attend rehearsals, guided by Andreja Gerželj Breščič, a professional mentor. They have participated in seminars on folk singing organized by JSKD (Public Fund for Cultural Activities), and their successful work has earned them multiple awards. The songs they sing are chosen with love for the Kras region, as they were once sung in the Kras villages, and the singers‘ desire is to preserve this tradition for future generations. Folk singing has its charm, so we invite you to listen to them and experience it for yourself.

    • 15:00 Klapa San Lorenzo

Klapa San Lorenzo from Portorož brings together enthusiasts of vocal singing, and in their repertoire, they have, in addition to predominantly Dalmatian songs, also Slovenian and Italian songs.

    • 17:00 Etno Quartet Teo Collori and Selver Kobilica

SELVER KOBILICA is a renowned ethno musician known throughout the Balkans. He hails from Zenica and currently resides in Sarajevo, where he performs with his band. Having spent many years in Slovenia, he is well acquainted with Slovenian musical culture and skillfully blends it with Balkan music. He is an exceptional musician and entertainer, which is often a rare combination.

TEO COLLORI is an outstanding Slovenian guitarist who masters multiple musical styles and instruments. He is the leader of the most successful instrumental group in Slovenia, known as Momento Cigano. He has received numerous awards both domestically and internationally. Together, they bring together the ethno melodies from across the Balkans.

This is a top-notch ensemble that never fails to captivate with its vibrant and sincere powerful energy.

Welcome to the Ethno Stage!

Activities at the Ethno Park take place in the park area near the children’s playground and are free of charge.
